How Do I Join the Church?

Long story short... you can't! At least you cannot join in the sense that most people understand the term (like placing membership with a local gym or library). The church cannot be joined in this sense. We cannot add people to the church on the basis of a vote or because they have filled out some form or paid some kind of entry fee. The church that Christ built isn't like that.
Only the LORD Himself adds people to His church when one responds to the gospel message of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ through a complete faith response and a dedication of one's life to His will and His purposes. This is far more than merely saying a prayer and moving on with one's life. It requires repenting of the moral failings (sin; the times in our life when we lived and did things counter to God's desires) and being immersed in water (baptism) so that we can receive the forgiveness available in Jesus and be added to His spiritual body... the church. This is exactly how the people who heard the gospel preached for the first time responded to the inspired preaching of Peter and the other apostles present on the day the church began: Acts 2:38-41 (ESV) 38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.” 40 And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.” 41 So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls. Obviously there is more to it than that.
